I recently updated my Touch with the new firm ware. Mind you it was an extremely  scary experience seeing as how I don't consider myself to be a hacker or anything but thankfully the update was successful. So, like everyone else I've noticed that the roaming feature is not working anymore. Can anyone explain to me how can I fix this remember, I'm new at this so explain to me in a "kid friendly" manner. Also, is it just me or is my GPS not working properly. Everytime I attempt to locate directions it takes up tp 10 minutes and finally it says that I am out of range.

This firmware removed this option, leaving us Sprint only or automatic. To get back the 3rd choice (after doing this change you won't be forced to do roaming only, you will just have that option should you want to use it in the future), edit the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\OEM\PhoneSetting and change the value for "AllowRoaming" to 0. This may already be 0, if so, leave it.

Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\OEM\InitProv\PhoneSett ing change "ItemCount" to "3" (no quotes) instead of the default "2". Create a new string ItemName3 with a value "Roam Only" (without quotes). It may seem complicated but its not too bad. First download the program. You can find it in this link:

Download this onto your computer and then drag it onto your phone. You can open it up on your phone and it will install itself. Then from their just follow the directions above. If you have any concerns before you do anything you can backup your registry so incase you do mess something up you have a safety net. Once you download it and look throw the pop-up menus you will see what to do.

Dumb question, why would I want to have an option to force roaming?

Because, if you live in an area like I do you:

1.  Are surrounded by old buildings and have horrible coverage.  By forcing roaming your phone doesn't constantly search for a signal and saves on battery life.

2.  Live in an area that isn't yet in the Sprint EVDO covered area.  By forcing roaming, I always have high speed internet on my phone as it grabs it off of the Alltel and Verizon towers.

That is why.
