Just downloaded the Core TCPMP.  Had no problem playing files, but they are jumpy beyond jumpy.  Any suggestions on settings to fix this?

Check out http://www.htcclassaction.org/ for some information.  Same problem on almost all HTC products that us Qualcomm 7xxx chips.  CorePlayer managed to connect up to the QTV module (HW Video Acceleration) that is present in the Tilt firmware that improves things quite a bit (25% - 50% improvment).  Hopefully the Mogul update from today will give the same to Mogul and that means the Touch will get it when it gets the equivilant update.

Actually you can use tcpmp without any problems, and full motion video.  I use it and love it.  Go to options/video and select "Raw framebuffer" or "GDI" instead of the default directdraw and your video will be as smooth as it should be.

For very specific resolutions, frame rates, and bitrate combinations sure.

But the phone chokes and drops frames on a 320x240 30fps at 300-400kbps!

That makes most DVDs unwatchable as this is about the minimum bitrate for the resolution and frame rate.  This is only a 5% or less drop rate, but any high movement frames look really bad.

The chip has HW acceleration for video decode and should be able to handle MPEG4 and H264 at VGA (640x480) at 30fps at 2Mbps.

So when it can't do a quarter the processing without dropping frames, I would say it is really slow.

Also try taking a TV show or DVD rip and playing the file you found on the internet when the resolution and rate will be closer to VGA and 1Mbps.  I don't want to have to reencode every clip I want.

I am hoping that the latest Mogul update gives us QTV support like the Kaiser has so that CorePlayer can see a 30-75% jump in performance as well!

...don't know what the above is talking about.  After doing the above, mine works fine.  I've also gotten whole tv shows and movies.  All run fine on my phone.  COULDN'T BE HAPPIER.  Maybe I'm a low tech person who is easily impressed - but I keep doing things with this phone people keep telling me can't be done.

I've watched everything from episodes of Whose Line Is It Anyway to Lord Of The Rings on my Touch. As long as I have Raw FrameBuffer selected it runs the movies with no dropped frames at all. I also generally convert the movies to a 320x240 size in order to save storage space. I couldn't be happier with the way TCPMP works.

How are you guys converting movies?  I haven't gotten or found a program yet I like.  Also - WISH, sprint offered EVDO in SC.  After using the system in another state... WOW.  The speed difference is crazy.

AJBopp and JWalt.

Can you post some of the properties as reported by TCMP of the files from that you are seeing no dropped frames on.

I am able to get no or less than 1% dropped frame rate when I reencode movies at 320x240 29fps with bit rates in the 350kbps range and use the Raw Buffer settings, but these movies show obvious encoding artifacts.

I have worked with video encoding and decoding (usage only) on other phones with Qualcomm parts in them and I can tell you the performance is poor in this device compared to what it is capable of.

I agree that the DirectDraw option is unusable.

My guess it is a precieved difference in expected quality and my desire to not have to go and reencode everything to lower resolution.

Most of my files look more or less like this:

Format: AVI, DivX

Video: MPEG-4 Video

Codec: MPEG-4 DivX/XviD

Video Size: 320x240

Fame Rate: 29.970

Audio: MP3

Codec: MPEG Audio

Format: 48000 Hz Stereo

Data Bit Rate: 64 kbit/s

Played Frames: 3856

Dropped Frames: 8

Played FPS: 29.908

At that encoding, the quality of the movie is pretty much as good as a screen this size is capable of showing.  350 kbps seems way over the top for a device this size.

I use Total Video Converter to reencode movies, but I'd like to find something better because that program invariably has sync problems between the audio and video.

I think this is debatable, but I understand where you are coming from too.  Thank you for the encoding information.  Just one thing, what is the average bit rate for the video?  I know the TCPMP doesn't have this, does Total Video Converter?

I will have to check out Total Video Encoder. Thanks for the tip.
